Futures of Education

Learning to Become!

UNESCO’s Futures of Education initiative aims to rethink education and shape the future. The initiative is catalyzing a global debate on how knowledge, education and learning need to be reimagined in a world of increasing complexity, uncertainty, and precarity.

Brainwiz worked with UNESCO New Delhi Office to reach out to multiple stakeholders globally to participate in the initiative and share their views on how they would like education to evolve in the 21st Century.

A global initiative to reimagine how knowledge and learning can shape the future of humanity and the planet.

With accelerated climate change the fragility of our planet is becoming more and more apparent. Persistent inequalities, social fragmentation, and political extremism are bringing many societies to a point of crisis. Advances in digital communication, artificial intelligence, and biotechnology have great potential but also raise serious ethical and governance concerns, especially as promises of innovation and technological change have an uneven record of contributing to human flourishing. (UNESCO)

UNESCO’s ‘Futures of Education’ initiative will mobilize the many rich ways of being and knowing in order to leverage humanity’s collective intelligence. It relies on a broad, open consultative process that involves youth, educators, civil society, governments, business and other stakeholders. The work will be guided by a high-level International Commission of thought-leaders from diverse fields and different regions of the world. The initiative will catalyze a global debate on how knowledge and learning can shape the future of humanity and the planet. (UNESCO)

Brainwiz got an opportunity to work closely with UNESCO New Delhi Office to take this initiative to multiple stakeholders in India and globally. We worked together to hold consultations on ‘Futures of Education’ with multiple groups, offline and online. The outcomes of these consultations will become a part of UNESCO’s report and further strategies on ‘Futures of Education’.

Scope of Work

We worked with the team at UNESCO New Delhi Office, teachers, parents, the deaf community, youth, and academicians from the entire South-East Asia region.

As the partners for the outreach of the initiative in India, Brainwiz’s tasks involved generating discussions on the changes we would like to see among the multiple stakeholders in the education sector. The three topics for discussion were:

1. Our changing world: How do you view the future?

2. Broad Purposes of Education

3. Implications for Learning

We organised, hosted, and moderated the focus group discussions on these topics for the participants of multiple consultations. The open-ended nature of focus group consultation allowed for people to explore and clarify their views. Group interaction was key to the focus group methodology. Upon completion of every consultation, Brainwiz submitted detailed outcomes and points for consideration to UNESCO.

Key Outcomes

We gathered thousands of inputs from hundreds of stakeholders working to reshape the future of education

Our changing world: How do you view the future?

Amidst multiple hopes and concerns that the learners shared, those around equity and democratization of education remained of utmost importance. Participants highlighted the mismatch between the existing education structure and the demands of the industry as a huge challenge for the future too.

Broad Purposes of Education

1. Social and Emotional competence is the foundation of successful living. It helps a person in all three areas of their life, that is home, workplace, and the society.

2. Employability that depends on certain skills like Higher order thinking skills, Technology skills, Psychomotor skills, and Entrepreneurial mindset.

3. Generic skills such as Effective and efficient use of language and mathematic concepts, Critical thinking, and Collaboration and the ability to transfer knowledge to skills.

Implications for Learning

Instead of transferring of knowledge, we should be talking about transferring of skills. Almost all participants unanimously agreed on the importance of imparting 21st-century skills to all learners right from school days. Everyone also emphasized on the role of the government in ensuring an equitable transfer of knowledge and resources to all learners.
